In the week that ended this Saturday, April 3rd, Brazil registered a record number of deaths due to covid-19. There were more than 19,600 fatalities in seven days, a figure that had never been witnessed.
The exact data from the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) points out that 19,643 fatal cases were reported between March 28th and April 3rd. The daily average, which exceeded 3 thousand deaths on Thursday (1st) and Friday (2nd), now stands at 2,806.
With this week’s tally, the country ends its seventh consecutive week with an accelerated increase in the number of deaths. Two months ago, the weekly sum was between 6,000 and 7,000 deaths.
This Saturday alone, state health departments in the country registered 1,987 deaths. The total number of lives lost to covid-19 since the outset of the pandemic in Brazil has reached 330,193.
This week Brazil registered 463,235 new infections, after almost a month with figures in excess of half a million. Between Sunday, March 28th, and Saturday April 3rd, there were 43,515 confirmed new cases. The total number of people who have been infected countrywide is 12,953,597.
