This is the first installment of the 2019 Year-End Special of our weekly show What’s Happening in Brazil.
We look back at the most important events involving the imprisonment and ultimate release of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was held as a political prisoner for 580 days and was finally freed after Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled that a person could be incarcerated only after exhausting all appeals.
We also look into president Jair Bolsonaro’s first year in office and the far-right policies his administration has implemented. Austerity measures, attacks against human rights, and scandals involving people close to him are some of the highlights.
Watch the show and stay tuned for the second and final installment of our 2019 Year-End Special, which will be aired next Saturday!
